What People Love About McNeil
The homeowners in McNeil chose to live there for their own specific reasons, but as a whole, they can typically agree on the same benefits to living in the community.
McNeil provides homes on large lots of land (up to 1 acre) that provides the opportunity for expansion. Many families are found in McNeil, as the lack of Homeowner’s Association and surplus of land allows them to expand their homes as their families grow.
Creative minds go wild in the neighborhood, from renovating sections of the homes to even doing a full demolition and rebuild. Even with the freedom of customization, the neighborhood has a cohesive look, reminiscent of simpler days.
Lush landscaping and trees allow McNeil to be 5-10 degrees cooler in the Summer, which can feel like a drastic change in the desert heat.
McNeil is made ups of many original homeowners that moved in when the community was as far as the city stretched and nothing but desert could be found beyond the neighborhood’s edge.
Because of this, many of their family members and friends have moved in around them. This neighborhood is not just a group of strangers living in the same area – it’s a community of friends and family that look out for one another.
Being in the community, you will often see children playing outside, mothers walking strollers and people enjoying a stroll with their dogs.
The Homes in McNeil
There are about 570 homes in McNeil, each showcasing the character of its tenants. The homes are mostly ranch models built in the 1940’s-1960’s.
These single-family houses sit on large lots, some spanning up to an acre in size, providing ample front and backyard space.
Many homeowners choose these houses because they are able to invest less in the purchase of the home itself, and spend the remainder of their budget on renovations and customizations to make the home unique to them – all while reaping the benefits of the lot size, location, and community.
Many come out spending less or around the same as what they would have spent for a “cookie-cutter” style home, commonly found throughout the rest of the Las Vegas valley.
A Little McNeil History
McNeil was founded in 1947 by Larry McNeil. In 1949, the first model opened in which Frank Strong moved into.
The streets in McNeil are all named after people in Las Vegas History:
- Cashman – Civic Leader
- Cahlan – Las Vegas Review-Journal founder/editor
- Ashby – President of Union Pacific
- Campbell – Developer/Realtor
- Mason – McNeil Construction Company Supervisor
Since many of the homeowners had built or purchased homes in the community shortly after its creation, the strong community connection was founded early on.
Community Events
McNeil hosts numerous events as a community throughout each year, including yard sales, block parties, and wine walks.
This allows the neighbors to come together, socialize and have a good time. Even if you just moved into the neighborhood, fellow homeowners make it feel like you’ve been a part of the community the whole time.
The community events aren’t just all about parties, but they are about doing good in the city, like giving back to charity, clean up the city events and more.
